Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty or boob reducing, is a surgical procedure used to remove excess fat, tissue and skin from the breasts in order to create smaller, perkier breasts.
Breast reductions usually result in lifting the nipple and areola to a higher position and may help reduce back, shoulder, neck, and head pain or help to achieve a breast size proportionate to body size. Boob reduction might also help improve your self-image and your ability to participate in physical activities.
During last couple of decades, there is an increase of women’s average breast size. Scientist agree on several factors that contribute this: better nutrition, more sedentary lifestyles and high-calorie foods have a direct impact on the size of breasts. Besides, women have a higher percentage of fat mass compared with lean muscle than men and they tend to store fat in particular places, one of them being the breasts.
Breasts are also developing much earlier. In 1900, the average age for menstruation to start was 16 – by 2000 it was 11 or 12.
Women with large breasts often must cope with persistent pain and discomfort as well as discomfort with their physical appearance. Some women complain of neck pain and strain, headaches, aching shoulders, low back pain, chronic infections under the breast fold, and other problems associated with oversized breasts. So, breast reduction surgery is meant for women who want to resolve issues such as:
You can have breast reduction surgery at any age, sometimes even as a teenager, but if your breasts aren’t yet fully developed, you might need a second surgery later in life (plastic surgeons usually recommend waiting until breast development has stopped after puberty).
Breast reduction surgery generally isn’t recommended if you smoke, are very obese, have chronic conditions such as diabetes or heart disease. If you’ve got disproportionately large breasts that are causing neck pain, back pain or other physical symptoms, you may want to consider a breast reduction.
You may be a good candidate for breast reduction if:
You might postpone breast reduction surgery if you have certain future plans, such as childbirth (breastfeeding might be challenging after breast reduction surgery) or weight loss.
Men who have enlarged breasts (a condition called gynecomastia) may also opt for breast reduction surgery. Gynecomastia is characterized by developing excess breast tissue or fatty tissue in one or both breasts.
Breast reduction surgery is usually done under general anesthesia, either in a hospital or outpatient surgical facility. It is an invasive procedure that removes fat, skin, and tissue while lifting the breasts. Plastic surgeons will determine the best technique to reduce the size of your breasts based on your individual condition, breast composition, amount of reduction needed/desired and your personal preferences.
The most common method of reducing breast size requires three incisions. The surgeon removes the excess tissue and fat through these incisions before lifting the nipple and areola to a higher position. The size of the areola (colored circle around the nipple) may also be reduced, and liposuction might be used to adjust the contour.
Recovery from breast reduction surgery varies person to person. Immediately after the procedure, your breasts will be covered with a gauze dressing or bandages and a tube might be placed under each arm to drain any excess fluid. For the first days/weeks following the surgery, your breasts will feel tender and sensitive and they might be swollen or bruised.
You’ll need to limit physical activity for two to four weeks while the breasts heal. Your breasts must be handled extremely gently for at least six weeks after the procedure. Mild, periodic discomfort during this time is normal.
The results of your breast reduction surgery will be long-lasting. Your new breast size should help relieve pain and physical limitations you experienced prior to surgery.
The price tag of the breast reduction varies based on a number of factors. A surgeon’s cost for breast reduction surgery may be based on his or her experience, the type of procedure used and the geographic location of the office. When choosing a surgeon for breast reduction, remember that the surgeon’s experience and your comfort with him or her are just as important as the final breast reduction costs.
